It is very sad, but they were tornadoes, not hurricanes.
Tornadoes just pop up in a frontal boundary with very little warning.

A big swath was impacted by tornadoes, all the way from Arkansas through Georgia, up through Tennessee and into Virginia. Death count is already close to 300 now. Will be doing some emergency ops work...
The death count in Alabama alone is over 200, with 50 from Tuscaloosa. In addition, at least 500 people in Tuscaloosa are not accounted for. The death toll could climb much higher.
Some areas were hit by smaller storms Wednesday morning that knocked out power. When the bigger storms came later that day, those without power did not get the warnings untill it was almost too late.
