...next installment of some friggen tourists doing touristy stuff.
As usual, great photos. Thanks for sharing!
The trains in Germany/Europe are awesome.
Did you get to go inside the Berliner Dom?? It is just as amazing inside as it is on the outside! And did you go to the museum that is nearby??
So while you were in Berlin, you didn't stop at the KaDeWe???? Kaufhaus des Westens (shopping center of the west). I bet the line going up der Turm was shorter than when I was there (Summer 2001).
Great pictures!
Great pix, as always -
Some day you'll have to fill us in on what you use for your standard photography "travel kit" - what lenses, et cetera...
Most awesome indeed!!!
If you make it through Copenhagen (Danske) say hello to my [exchange] brother Morten Krogholt (the first o should have a slash and the 2nd with 2 dots atop).
Happy trails.

Nice pictures! Could you tell us what a trip like that would cost a couple? My first thought was that the pictures seemed nearly devoid of people, but then again it is nearly winter and people tend to stay inside. Are those cities built for underground shopping and entertainment like so many of the Canadian cities?
Daryl,
Astonishing pictures! As usual.
At risk of being redundant why don’t you submit them to:
http://ngm.nationalgeographic.com/ngm/photo-contest/
And you videos to:

Dirty Jobs? Oh well....
I’ll bet if you sent your video of Alaska surveying to the Discovery Channel they may do a special on you.
Thanks for posting and have a great Holiday season! And a safe trip home. 🙂
I was in Germany from 79-81 near Wurzburg, doing my 82C thing.
Interesting to note that many of those old buildings are stitched up pretty good. As in a line of bullet holes from a strafing run. Amazing to see some of what was rebuilt after the War as well.

I went to England for New Years Eve back in the day when I was stationed in Germany. The trip across the English Channel was fine. However, the trip coming back was a completely different story. The English Channel was rocking the ferry pretty hard. They were handing out barf bags to everyone.
Half way through the trip, I couldn't hang any longer, so I decided to head towards the bathrooms. I would wait for the ferry to "level" out while it was in a crest or a trough, and make my way towards the bathroom, and then try to catch a seat once the ferry started to ascend or descend a wave. When I finally made it, there were a whole lot of sick looking people congregated around the bathroom area. There was a lot of vomit on the floor in that area. I went in anyhow. All the urinals, toilets, sinks, and wastebasket were already overflowing with vomit. Needless to say, I add to the mess...
I'll never forget it, and next time I'll take the Chunnel...
Thanks again.
Where is all the crass commercialism of the holiday season?
Nice pics.
I went to the 2nd Grade Christmas presentation yesterday.
The theme was Christmas in various countries.
It was enlightening as to how the customs vary or are different from here.
I like that in Italy..."Santa" is a witch and I really liked Sweden where you stay up late and drink coffee and eat buns.
Holiday greetings to you and yours
and safe travels.

I crossed the channel one day in the Spring when they had canceled all the ferries due to high seas.
We took the hovercraft and it was a fun ride over to Calais bouncing off the waves and riding up on the beach.
I only saw one person who looked sick.

Nice!
I looks as if you passed very near my wife's hometown of Bremen, Germany.
Before they moved to the states they were living in Bremerhaven, Germany.
My father in law was a Captain on an ocean going cargo ship.

Daryl, Berlin looks as interesting in your photos as I'd expected it to be. Oddly, the image that will probably stick with me the longest is that of the polished brass plaque at the British Embassy, the one with the office hours cast into it. It's reassuring to know that there will always be a Britain, although who knows where you'll find it after hours. :>
No Darrell...we only had a day and a half in Berlin...more of a rest stop in a long journey...so just kinda walked around gawking

here's a link to my camera kit... The Canon 40D with the EFS 10-22 mm lens is my favorite and the one I probably use the most...I'm not too big a fan of flash photography..it has its place but shooting with slow shutter speeds brings out the natural light for a more realistic image of what is being shot in my opinion, of course stabilizing the camera is important with slow shutters...so I carry a small tripod as well...
My dream camera would be the Canon 7D .. more powerful and then I can ditch the video camera because it shoots high def vid as well...

yes...alot of indoor shopping these days... few tourists in the Winter so easier to take photos without the masses mucking it up... Berlin train station at 1:00 am is like a ghost town, except for the odd couple of police strolling around with machine guns..
Cost is relatively and surprisingly cheap if you stay in Eastern Europe (Poland, Czech republic, Slovakia, Hngary, Romania, etc)but Western Europe you better bring buckets of money.
There are some great internet sites for planning european travel (Trip Advisor, DFDS Seaways,
Rail Europe)

hey..thanks for those links FL/GA, I've only won one photo contest in my life for the Oregonian Travel photo Contest...I'm kind of a lazy photographer, I'll have to put in more effort.
Happy Holidays to yourself...trying to head back to Amsterdam tomorrow on the Ferry to work our way back home but Britain is all jacked with bad weather so it'll be interesting to see if the train is even running to Edinburgh in the morning...

Now this I would enjoy seeing!!
The pics you took of Auschwitz are the ones that have stuck in my mind & heart the most. I mean I've seen pics online, in magazines, books, etc... but it is different when someone personally has gone there and snapped the pics you did. Can't quite put my finger on why, though. *sigh*
😐
Come home soon! Be safe! 🙂
We took a group of school-kids on a trip to England and France years ago. Crossing the Channel, my wife and I had somehow had the foresight to take a dramamine, but most of the other people were barfing their heads off. Once one person does it, it's downhill from there.
