This was in a letter I sent to Granny. Postmark says 5 Mar, 1970.
I would have been only 9 at the time. Don't recall sending it but apparently it made and impact on me.
The poem title: "What Do We Plant"
Here goes:
What do we plant when we plant the tree?
We plant the ship that will cross of the sea.
We plant the mast to carry the sails.
We plant the plank to withstand the gales.
The keel and keelson and beam and knee.
We plant the ship when we plant the tree.
What do we plant when we plant the tree?
We plant the house for you and me.
We plant the rafters the shingles and the floor.
We plant the studding the lath and the doors.
The siding the beams all parts that be.
We plant the house when we plant the tree.
What do we plant when we plant the tree.
A thousand things we dayly see.
We plant the spire that outowers the grag.
We plant the staff for our country's flag.
We plant all these when we plant the tree.
That's it. Just thought some might enjoy it.
E.
I was cuttin' some line,
About a quarter past nine,
When I decided to have me a smoke.
When I sat in the grass,
A snake bit my ass,
And to top it all off I was broke.
