I've never heard of a Doctor, Attorney, Dentist or any other licensed professional offering such discounts so why should I??ÿ A "simple small job" might get a quote of $1,000 and turn into a contract.?ÿ Every now a can of worms is opened and the client gets the discount when it costs me more to get the job done correctly.?ÿ

@chris-bouffard When I was in college had to see a dentist who told me I was grinding my teeth. I told him I was going to school and didnƒ??t have two nickels to rub together. He said what can you afford and did the work at a big discount, he didnƒ??t have to. Later when I was a rich surveyor I paid the full rate and stuck with him until he retired. Iƒ??ve done a few discounted surveys for working.people with limited means because I knew nobody else would. Paying it forward I guess. Somebody looking to take advantage of my generosity would likely not receive it.

I've never given anyone a discount.?ÿ At least none that they ever knew about.?ÿ Same when I charge a PIA a premium.

I've never been asked for a military discount and I live near a Marine base.?ÿ ?ÿAs a Marine vet married to a disabled Army vet, I wouldn't advertise military discounts on professional services.?ÿ Not that I am ungrateful ... I'm just in "the business" and not "the ministry",?ÿ when it comes to surveying.?ÿ ?ÿHaving said that, helping someone out on a case by case scenario is a whole different story.?ÿ?ÿ

@firestix Being a Marine myself I agree. If someone like lowes or Home Depot advertise a discount because being a veteran so be it I will accept. I am grateful for that. If I know of a fellow veteran in need then he or she will get some necessities like groceries etc. they donƒ??t even know where it came from. But the same thing for those in need that are not veterans. Now I have been asked for help finding a job etc from vets. I will use all my resources and contacts to help get them an opportunity. ?ÿ

On the flip side I have played the veteran card on trying to get some credit for my time and education from my geodetic experience and schooling from different surveying boards. A couple states said no none of it will count while others said put the information in your application and we will do our best to give you some credit where applicable. Now after just taking the FS exam I was paid back for my geodetic training and experience and also the Defense Mapping School time. Several questions on the exam were closely related. GIS questions grid to ellipsoid distance and sea level reduction. Along with some RSI Lidar and GPS. So I figure I have been given a little help. ?ÿ

@williwaw

Nice.?ÿ I think I had something similar to that happen with a dentist when I was in school too.?ÿ I went in for a mild tooth ache, no insurance, but I had a little cash to work with.?ÿ I ended up having a wisdom tooth with a cavity that was too big to repair so they insisted on pulling it.

I knew little to nothing about medical costs since I never had to pay for them before, but I had heard how they bankrupt families sometimes so I was a little nervous.?ÿ When I asked the lady how much it would cost I think they quickly assumed I was poor and told me $150.?ÿ This was about 20 years ago so maybe an extraction back then in a rural farm state really was about $150, but I don't think so.?ÿ Anyway, I could afford that so I said alright let's do this.

I'm actually really curious to know if they cut me a big discount without telling me now that I think about it.

Edit:?ÿ NM, I googled prices and it looks like an extraction costs not much more than that today so I guess I probably paid the regular price.?ÿ I just know I was worried about being told something crazy like $3000 and ending up in a medical debtor's prison. ?????ÿ

@jitterboogie My nephew was stationed at Fort Benning, Georgia and my sister went to a ceremony where he was given command of a particular section of the training there.?ÿ The Commanding General of Fort Benning was part of the ceremony and my sister got to meet and speak with him.?ÿ He gave her a "Challenge Medal" after the reception was over.?ÿ She proudly displays that one.

As a side note the name Fort Benning will soon go away.?ÿ I have asked my nephew to bring me a cap or tee shirt with the name on it.

@andy-bruner?ÿ

Awesome.

I'm no Ranger but that's Ft Benning, and those are Rangers.

Rangers lead the way!

I'll post my coin my cousin gave me.

Thanks for sharing!

@firestix?ÿ

Roger that.

I'm just a bench sitter, didnt serve but have worked with lots of EOD and combat engineers doing UXO work. a few other buddies in air assault status and they all went through Benning for jump training.?ÿ?ÿ

When I was in the boy scouts I wasn't allowed to go to Benning for rappel training because I wasn't 12, and I was super pissed ???.

@jitterboogie you better be careful slapping down a challenge coin. If someone was to slap one down a little higher you buy the beer. It can be costly lol. I have not slapped one down in years but seeing yours makes me want to run to the local bar and see how many drinks i can get or have to buy. ?ÿThose were the good old days. ?ÿ
