Any advice on study materials for the FS exam?
Posted by Landsurveyor77 on July 2, 2019 at 3:12 pmHello,
I’m preparing for the FS exam and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on books, materials, seminars/webinars or courses that would aid in studying for the exam. I am located in NY state. Thanks in advance.

Read this cover to cover, and work the practice problems.
Surveyor Reference Manual https://www.amazon.com/dp/1591266483/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_8T9gDb6WJJ049
It would also be helpful to find and review high school cliff notes on Algebra, Algebra II, Geometry, Calculus, and Earth Sciences.
Do a Google search on “spherical triangles.”
Contact NYSAPLS. They have study materials for both the FS and PS portions of the test.
PLS NJ & NY, PP NJThe Ted Madson course is good.

I second the Surveyor Reference Manual, and any of the PPI materials, and get the lastest FS Exam booklet from NCEES.
FS was heavy on the Math side. They like horizontal and vertical curves for some reason. ????
Brush up on your mathematics, then take the course if you decide to.
You need to develop an intuition on these tests. They can, and will present anything to you.
You MUST be prepared. Do not skip any sections in your prep materials. Also try not to rush into a test date.
Work in a efficient manner, and you’ll know when you’re ready. It consumed me. Stay focused!
Good luck. Takes work. But anything worth having…… is worth earning.
