That's More Like It!
I’m working on a project that’s mostly about establishing geodetic control but also requires reestablishing the location of a quarter corner that got wiped out by construction. The control work is fairly small scale, with most tie distances between 1/2 mile and a mile, so I ran a pair of 20-minute fast-static sessions on each one.
After adjusting the GPS work I set up on one point and backsighted another 1/2 mile away so I could set the quarter corner monument, but the backsight check distance was off by 0.06′. That was quite a bit more than I was expecting, so I checked temp and pressure settings, but they were okay. Then I remembered that I had left a full-size prism at the backsight instead of the mini that I mostly use. I changed the prism type in the DC and reshot the backsight, and this time the miss was 0.004′. Much better!
