Survey Project Manager

Survey Project Manager

Fairbanks, Alaska

Description

I’m the Chief Land Surveyor at a multi-disciplinary engineering, architecture, and surveying firm based in Fairbanks, Alaska. We’re looking for a new leader to take over the Survey Department. I’ve spent the past 30 years in this role and plan to stay on part-time for the next couple of years to ensure a smooth transition and provide support as your right-hand man.

Our survey department handles a wide range of local projects, including subdivisions, mortgage surveys, flood elevation certificates, and property corner staking. We also support in-house engineering efforts with topographic surveys, aerial mapping, as-builts, and survey control. We have projects statewide, and travel to local villages to do site plans for new schools and clinics. We have stepped back from routine construction staking, but Fairbanks is growing, and there are always new construction projects that need support. Our clients include the borough, state and federal agencies, military, and Alaska Native corporations.

Our department consists of five full-time employees, including myself, with everyone cross-trained in both field and office work. We have six Leica GS16 receivers configured for GSM reception, along with a Leica robotic total station, levels, and a new BLK2GO scanner that we plan to integrate into our as-built workflows. The team is supported by two dedicated survey trucks and a large garage.

Our company has state-of-the-art facilities.  Conference rooms with large screen monitors, performance workstations, large format plotter, and the latest drafting and management software.  Our benefit package includes annual leave and paid holidays, health insurance, HSA plan, and 401(k) profit sharing plan with contributions of up to 12.5%.  Depending on experience, you could expect a salary of approx. $120k, plus yearly bonus distributions.  We are a locally owned company that was established in Fairbanks nearly 70 years ago.

We are looking for a land surveyor who has a field-to-finish skill set, good communication skills, and wishes to mentor the new generation of professional land surveyors.  This surveyor needs to have a strong background in surveying in the PLSS, experience drafting subdivision plats to State and Borough specifications, and the ability to become licensed in Alaska.

Living and working in Alaska is a dream.  Hunting, fishing, hiking, and skiing is right at your back door.  Midnight sun in the summer, northern lights in the winter.  You will have surveying opportunities that you just can’t get in the lower 48.  If you’re interested in learning more, feel free to send me a message or visit our website at Design Alaska.
