Winners of the 2022 Photo Contest! 😀

Page 1 of 5Next

I'm pleased to announce the winners of SurveyorConnect's first-ever photo contest! ????

We had a total of 42 entries, and there were a few folks that submitted more than one. Unfortunately, quite a few of the entries were photos that are too small for print, so those were immediately weeded out. We were left with 24 solid entries. However, in the interest of fairness, some of the remaining photos were multiples from single parties, so we established a maximum of two winning photos for a single person. As you might imagine, this brought the eligible number of photos down significantly.

Still, even with the reduced choices, it was hard to pick 12 photos to use for the calendar. They were all good, even the ones that were initially disqualified. When I started the contest and immediately began to receive entries, I knew that picking 12 was going to be a tough job. And indeed it was.

Once the final 12 were selected, I then had the job of using the submitted data to determine each photo's title. I truly appreciate the submissions and many had very thorough descriptions, which helped me title them accordingly. I tried to keep them true to the title submitted, but some were very long and needed to be more brief.

Then it was time to build the calendar. There was a lot of trial-and-error, since I've never built one before. I finally got through it and I really like how it came out. It is already online and available for purchase here.

Ok, I'll quit stalling and get to the stuff you really want to know... the winners! I've also posted the results on the Photo Contest page.

The Grand Prize winner is:

  • Bill Hart (@bill93), with ƒ??Barn near GSVS14 BMƒ?, west of Cedar Rapids, Iowa USA

The Honorable Mentions are as follows:

  • Jitterboogie (@jitterboogie) with ƒ??Almost too close for comfortƒ? in Las Cruces, New Mexico USA
  • Stacy Carroll (@stacy-carroll) with ƒ??Incoming and outgoingƒ? in Clark County, Georgia USA

  • BushAxe (@bushaxe) with ƒ??Warrior Creekƒ? in Wilkesboro, North Carolina USA

  • Ethan McGaughey (@ethanmcg) with ƒ??3D modeling the Climax-War Memorial Bridgeƒ? in North Dakota and Minnesota USA

  • Christof Lambrecht (@christ-lambrecht) with ƒ??High-voltage projectƒ? in Huy, Wallonia, Belgium

  • Jed Steelhead (@jed) with ƒ??Searching for pinsƒ? in Pacific Coast Range, Oregon USA

  • Brian Riniker (@briniker) with ƒ??Returning from railroad surveyƒ? in Nora Springs, Iowa USA

  • Mike Berry (@mike-berry) with ƒ??Cascade Lakes Scenic Highwayƒ? in Deschutes County, Oregon USA

You'll likely notice that there aren't 12 winners listed -- this is because we used two photos from 3 of them.

We'll get the prizes out to the winners soon! I'll be following up with each of you to confirm mailing addresses.

I would like to also point out that I customized the calendar to include specific surveying-related events and historical dates. Most notable of those are two events that memorialize Mark Deal (his birthday and his first post on rpls.com). ????

Once you receive your calendar, if you notice any surveying-related historical dates are missing, please let me know! I'd like to be able to include them in the 2023 calendar.

Is there a way to preview the calander photos?

Yes, if you click one of the links to the calendar page you can see the winning photos.

Thanks!  Sorry for those folks who didn't have enough pixels -- I'll bet there were some good ones there.

@bill93

Indeed! It was a difficult task to figure out which ones to use and it would have been nearly impossible had all the entries been large enough to print.

Are those the correct Mark Deal dates?

That's what I came up with.

@wendell  my mistake.  I meant 05.22.1996

Cool beans. Looking forward to seeing it. Nice touch to have survey related dates on it. Yet another way to educate annoy family and friends with survey facts!
