Trimble M3-use with external data collector?

I never got that working, now I want to try again. I have a TDC600. It connects to the M3 by bluetooth.

But I can't get access on the TDC600 to talk to the M3. There is an option under survey styles...conventional...instrument for a Trimble M3 & C5. Not really much to set here.

I think something would need to be set on the M3 for remote access/control. It is not a robotic instrument, just want to be able to tell it to shoot and then store the observation.

The M3 has access onboard (2012), but I want to be able to combine GNSS observations on the TDC600 and then use the M3 in the same file.
