SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT for SurveyorConnect Members
As much as possible, we will be attempting to get old links to redirect to the same thread on the new rpls.com website. It can be difficult to get all of them, since we've moved from software to software over the years. But even to this day, I watch the 404 logs here and will manually redirect to appropriate threads, when possible. That's just one of the many reasons I spend so much time here...
The internet was still very new, at least to me, around the time I got my license in 1997. One day, I ended up on RPLS.com. I liked the content and began posting. I quickly grew a thick skin and learned that surveying varies greatly across the country and people don't always agree. I also soaked up a lot of surveying knowledge from other places that I would have never seen elsewhere. When I went out on my own, Mark Deal emailed saying he had just done the same and offered encouragement and moral support for my endeavor. It was good to know there was somebody else experiencing the same things and doing well. Mark was a really good guy that had the really good idea to create a surveyors message board. What a 'Mark' he made on our lives! AND, I truly believe the RPLS.com torch is in the right hands now! What an honor to Mark Deal! What a way for a man to be remembered by his peers! Now we have a really good guy with the really good idea to keep the legacy alive. Thanks Wendell.
Golly gee willickers, Stacy... I do my best but Mark left some big shoes to fill. Your words are much appreciated.
With that said, it is YOU -- the members of SurveyorConnect -- that make this place what it is. Who are the ones that provide the advice, insight, and mentoring to others? Who are the ones that visit here regularly to fulfill those tasks? Who donates their time (and sometimes money) to keep this place going? You!

To be fair, if we had the old posts, we'd realize how we were just repeating ourselves.
Oh, my, yes. I remember those days where you could comment directly to a specific post and it showed up directly following that post no matter where it was within the string of posts (thread). There was strong debate on such style issues of the website. Plusses for this style or negatives for the same style. Which was more coherent?

In the new site, we'll have the option to have threaded replies once again. I'm not immediately sure how it will affect the usability in the new system, but here it wreaked havoc. I suspect that it could actually be helpful in the new system, but it's one of those things where you kind of have to try it out and see.
I always liked threaded replies because it helped in understanding the references. It wasn't really that long ago that we abandoned threaded replies here because it messed with the ability to view the newest reply, because it would take you to a new sub-reply in the middle of the thread even if there were newer replies below it. It was confusing in that regard, yet made more sense if you were just reading the thread from top to bottom. It's a bit of a conundrum.
But perhaps we'll give it shot in the new forums at some point. Right now my focus is just getting it ready and moving over there. Then we can play with features. 🙂
