In need of a job
Quote from Ryan_K on January 29, 2011, 8:45 am2 years ago I got laid off because of the whole economy. I have been working at odd jobs just trying to get by. Right now I'm working at Petco as an Aquatic Specialist so I can feed my 3 kids and wife.
I miss Surveying!!!! It was the one job I really enjoyed doing. I have a degree in CAD and I am currently studying for my LSIT.
My father was a Surveyor so I grew up around it my whole life (he just retired from the County a few months ago). I have 7 years working experience.
Does anybody know if the economy is picking up anywhere in the U.S. At this point I don't mind travel. I just want to go hiking in the hills searching for monuments. Pound some stakes and write on some lath. Dodge traffic. Create wonderful maps using Legal Descriptions and a computer.

Quote from jamesdredmon on January 30, 2011, 6:26 pmActually there are some jobs here in Texas. We had 14 crews start two weeks ago and will probably need about 10 to 15 more in the next few months. We are hiring at every level, so if some of you registered people are looking for work also, then send me your resume and I will get it in the mix.

Yes, I think things are, very slowly, getting better. That said it may very possibly be quite a while before it gets better for you. In the mean time I recommend that you find a way to stay in touch with as many people in your surveyor network as you possibly can.

I am in Austin. Most of the work comes out of this office, but most of our field work is spread around 3 or 4 states. Very few of our crews are working in Austin. It would actually be OK for someone moving in, since they could collect the per diem and such without having to pay for a home here like many permanent residents do.
