Dr. David Raleigh Knowles, PE, PLS, PhD
Mar 7, 1938 - July 3, 2023
How do you respond to that? I grew up surveying. I have bragged that I "Wrote over 10 books before I got liscensed". (Can writing a field book be considered "Writing a book"?) Never know.
But, the discussion about requiring "A 4 yr college degree" to obtain liscensure, came up occasionally. I never fully made up my mind. But, I ALWAYS wanted to sit in on David Knowles sessions. He could break apart a subject, sufficiently, to justify the time spent listening to him.
Since David is now gone, there is no reason to go to college, so this closes that chapter... At least that's how I feel, reading that obit.
A really great teacher has gone after the "Big Trout" now. And, now more falls on me to help others realize that tying more flies, does not mean more profit.
I remember one story Dr. Knowles told. He was tying flies. And, as a single man working on it. he could tie 50 flies a day. And, for supplies, it cost a dollar per fly to make them. and, he was selling them for 50 cents apiece. The surveyor solution?
Hire more help, so the Dr. Knowles fly tying operation could tie 100 per day, effectively doubling production.
RIP Dr. Knowles.
Nate
My condolences to the family and friends. Dr. Knowles was one of the few that encouraged me to pursue licensure.
Sad to hear the news but he clearaly impacted lots of lives. I never met him, but only heard great things and read a lot of his writings. Happy fishing my fellow Pike.
The view from that moument to the South. RIP
