To me, BeerLeg is what I think of first even though this site has evolved beyond and the homepage can easily be distinguished and completely demonstrate.
I wear my BeerLeg merchandise proudly and use my BeerLeg coozie at seminars and such.
As a newcomer, I don't know much of the history here.?ÿ I have picked up that the site used to be called beerleg and that there was some other similar site that started well and met an unfortunate, untimely, and poor end.?ÿ SurveyorConnect is news to me- fewer geezers grumbling (sarcasm, I think) about that name change I guess.?ÿ

What Bill said, you explained, and I checked, all the domain urls correctly resolve/forward to the correct post so that old links out there should still be valid.?ÿ Some people will always call it beerleg, others (apparently) SurveyorConnect, and some RPLSToday.?ÿ Some people will probably even call it by an incorrect name recognizing RPLSToday as the legitimate heir to some previous site.?ÿ Surveyors will use as many names and descriptions for this website as with 1" iron rods.?ÿ

Other people have commented that the site will continue to be a success regards of what you call it- you can't get rid of us even if you wanted to.?ÿ Name, brand, and URL don't have to the same (although things are headed that way).?ÿ Do what feels right to you; we'll be right behind you. ?ÿ ?ÿ?ÿ
I appreciate your feedback, coming from a relatively new user. There does indeed seem to be some confusion with people thinking that rplstoday.com is simply the same owners and website as rpls.com, but that couldn't be further from the truth. My thinking when moving to the rplstoday.com domain name actually had nothing to do with that other site... it is simply a standard acronym used in the industry and I rolled with it. There was also something to be said for the relative obscurity of the acronym, because the intent is to NOT necessarily attract "normal" users -- I'm proud that our statistics are laser focused on surveyors and not the general public. To me, this equates to a high percentage of quality users that have a distinct interest in surveying.
In its heyday, rpls.com boasted 40-something thousand registered users -- however, most of us understood that number was highly inflated by spammers and didn't reflect reality. Here, we cut spammers off at the pass and ban them from the system, without counting them in our statistics. So the 10,000+ users number you see today is pretty accurate as far as being actual users. There's likely some level of chaff there, since no system is perfect, but I try to keep things as clean as possible on a manual basis. In fact, if I *did* actually count the spammer accounts, we'd be over 100k users. Would that potentially attract more advertisers? Very possibly. But I wouldn't be able to sleep at night if I did that.

Just my thoughts: every time you change names, directions, energy expenditure, you loose followers.
This too happens, if you "go back", it happens every time.
Now, I'd like to see the following:
I'd like to see your offerings expanded, so as to add:
A tax assessor discussion board, a realtor discussion board, a title company discussion board, and a land owner discussion board. Maybe even some more.
And, put links between these, so as to help the overall business of spatial reference data.
And, this question, (name of this survey side) should be made, in the light of this direction.?ÿ

By golly, that's an interesting idea.?ÿ I would enjoy listening in on such discussions if they were as entertaining and educational as the ones that appear on this board.?ÿ Once, about 20 years ago,?ÿ I attended the State meeting of the title company workers organization to take in some of their educational programs.?ÿ That was VERY interesting.?ÿ At the time there was a semi-local title company that was considering selling their business and I was considering making such an investment.?ÿ We never really got down to talking dollars, though, as they decided to wait.
Great ideas but this place is already a lot of work with little (monetary) reward. To make those other ones viable, I'd likely have to chase down advertisers pertinent to their needs and I just don't have time for all that. I don't mind it so much here because my heart is in it.
Perhaps a little advertising in the correct places might attract some of those other professions to at least lurk here and possibly join in just so they could debate certain issues with us.?ÿ Much of what we do is directly tied to what they do and vice versa.?ÿ More head count, more advertising.

Likely not. But honestly, I never expected this website to ever reach as far as it has. That's a good thing... so yeah, it's probably a pretty obscure acronym outside the U.S.
We officially changed from LS to PS a year or two ago, but I still go with LS because that is what is on my stamp.
