I can relate, and it's no fun,,,,,this getting older stuff has drawbacks.?ÿ

I could probably hear a lot better if I didn't have the horrible ever present roar of tinnitus in my head.?ÿ The confounding thing is I can hear every word an operator yells when I'm standing next to his 600 hp Detroit Diesel track-hoe roaring at 2700 rpm...but I can't hear my wife when she's sitting next to me and asks for the TV remote.

My simple explanation to half the population is that I can no longer hear female voices. ?ÿWhen they respond negatively, I pretend to hear absolutely nothing.
Spent most of my childhood around Mom, Grandma, big Sister and female teachers. ?ÿAdd in 86 percent of cousins are female. ?ÿPlus two wives, three daughters and two granddaughters. ?ÿIt's no wonder I can't hear females now.
I'm not hard of hearing, I'm ignoring you.
(And I've changed my will three times since I got hearing aids.)
It's my left ear, sit on my left side in a crowded restaurant and I will nod and say lots of mmms, uhhas and ohhs and I will probably have little idea what you are saying. ?ÿ

There IS a frequency that I cannot hear, and unfortunately my wife speaks in that frequency.?ÿ I caused that frequency loss, albeit by accident, by so many tears of shooting shotguns.?ÿ If I am looking directly at my wife and she is looking directly at me I can "hear" what she is saying.?ÿ If either of us is looking the other way I lose the understanding.

A friend of mine has several children.?ÿ His wife wears hearing aids.?ÿ He said when they get in bed at night he asks, "Do you want to go sleep or what?"?ÿ Without her hearing aids she say, "What?"

I met a relative onetime in his mid sixties, he was a nice guy but hard of hearing and hard of head enough that he refused to go to doctors about anything. After knowing him for a decade he finally relented and saw a doctor, they drilled some holes and drained some fluid and his hearing returned.
Turns out he was a super interesting and thoughtful person with all kinds of insight and encouragement, what a waste that he spent at least a decade sitting there at the holiday smiling along but not participating because he was too stubborn to see a doctor.

Even with hearing aids you will have a difficult time hearing most females simply because they have a habit of turning away before they talk.
