My dad, Bud Uzes, loved surveying history, instruments and books. He authored two editions of Chaining the Land (in 1977 and 2006) and the Illustrated Price Guide to Antique Surveying Instruments and Books (in 1980). In 1995, I created The Compleat Surveyor business to help him in his never-ending quest to find more old instruments and books.

In 2019 I built a new website after a decade long hiatus from the hobby - The Compleat Surveyor. The website focuses on two things. First, the website is a digital reference library for new and seasoned collectors of vintage surveying books and instruments. I’ve posted over 160 instrument maker catalogues in pdf form on the website, for example, as well as most of the other reference materials that my dad relied on as a surveyor for 40 years. Second, I’m offering for sale some very interesting and rare instruments and books.

I recently joined RPLS.com as a Vendor. I am hoping to grow my business while helping Wendell build a thriving forum going forward.

A few days ago I launched by Annual Black Friday Sale. You can see all of my sale items here: Black Friday 2023. As an RPLS.com get acquainted special, I will give any RPLS.com purchaser an extra 10% off any instrument priced $1000 or less. If you want to buy something more expensive, we can discuss a meaningful get acquainted discount as well.

If you haven’t seen my website in the last few years, please take a look. I’ve added a good deal of interesting education information to it.

Thanks,

Russ Uzes
