@john-putnam?ÿ

Love the Blues!

They probably needed that battery for their POS truck that wouldn't start down the road somewhere...

I love that drive down into Pendleton esp when the clouds/fog are thick off the Columbia.

Makes it feel like you're flying down to the runway.

The newer Leica TS have an option to purchase LOC8, works I assume similar to a Lojack, etc. You can track the instrument on your phone. I don't think offered on GNSS instruments, but this seems like a good idea and worth the purchase price if available on any gear.

I have had GNSS gear stolen twice in the past and a previous employer had thefts twice, it is common even in remote areas in the PNW.

Had my Escape broken into around 2009.?ÿ They smashed the driver side window and took my Garmin GPS.?ÿ I had a full Leica 1200 robot and 1230 network rover setup in the backseat.?ÿ They never opened the Leica cases.?ÿ They did open case that held the network modem that clipped on the bottom of the data collector.?ÿ They must have been confused as to what that was and left all the expensive gear.?ÿ

The window and Garmin replacement costs sucked, but I learned a valuable lesson about where to park.?ÿ It could have been a lot worse.

Hope your equipment turns up.

We had a rash of incidents like that in my town a couple years back.?ÿ The Pelican case that I carry my data collector in is too big to fit in my truck tool boxes, so I carry it on the passenger seat.?ÿ When those smash-and-grabs started happening I took to looping a steel cable through the seat supports and padlocking it to the Pelican case. It's a minor nuisance to lock and unlock it, but the lock is in plain sight, and I'm hoping that'll be enough to deter a thief from bothering to smash the window.

We have seen several instances of our customers gear getting stolen.?ÿ Two companies got broken into overnight, one lost all of their survey gear.?ÿ There was another company that got robbed of their robot, at gunpoint, in the middle of the day.?ÿ

I think I found one of the robots on https://offerup.com/.?ÿ I have a search set for Trimble and a good looking S5 showed up for $3800.?ÿ I told the guy that I had cash in hand, just needed to get the serial number to check it out.?ÿ He basically told me to pound sand, just in a slightly more colorful way.

Stay safe and keep your head on a swivel!?ÿ

I'm not sure what kind of insurance some of you guys are carrying.?ÿ The only applicable one I am familiar with is an inland marine policy and I was told the only kind of thievery it would cover is if someone visibly broke into something to get their hands on it.

Might depend on insurance carrier, I have had two separate incidents since 1995, both paid out under the inland marine policy, after the second pay out, the cancel letter almost beat the check to the mailbox. Last claim was in 2001 IIRC, so probably on borrowed time, although I use a base station less and less and almost never a total station, BUT all that gear is locked in the truck, so in case of theft from a locked truck I still have exposure. Not much other than smaller value stuff is in the cab visible to prying eyes, maybe that completely enclosed diamond plate bed I had built in 2000 has been a deterrent.
