About 12 years somebody stole the tripod out from under our base just outside Las Cruces. Left everything, battery, radio, GPS unit...except the tripod.?ÿ
So...a smart thief then!?ÿ Obviously really needed that tripod.?ÿ
Insurance takes care of the hardware loss, but lost billable hours and blown schedules are another matter.
I'm too old to roll around on the ground with a thieving crackhead, but I will be disturbingly cruel in every way I can think of if you wreck my business.
I hope you are made whole in the end.
I'm not sure what kind of insurance some of you guys are carrying.?ÿ The only applicable one I am familiar with is an inland marine policy and I was told the only kind of thievery it would cover is if someone visibly broke into something to get their hands on it.

Reparations.?ÿ Surveyors contributed to western expansion and slave ownership.?ÿ?ÿ
Guilty until proven innocent.?ÿ (Racism is alive and well in the U.S.)
That sucks.?ÿ I hope the thieves do try to sell it to a dealer or online, and you get them.
Weird, the only things I've ever had stolen were cones.?ÿ Like people are too honest to steal the big or expensive items I've left alone, but have no qualms about lifting a cone or two, maybe thinking, it's no big deal
All serial numbers, descriptions, and photos were given to the police.?ÿ We have a very good records since we just insured everything.?ÿ We have a backup system but we still lost an entire day of work (so far).?ÿ?ÿ
You either have bad luck, or crews leaving equipment in the wrong location. Working solo and paying for all my equipment I never leave it vulnerable areas. Get a spotter or lock it down.?ÿ
Long ago I was staring at a target through the the theodolite from several blocks away and witnessed a car stop in the intersection and grab the target!?ÿ Too far away to catch 'em but it was a small town so I kept my eyes peeled for the car, to no avail.
Back in the fiber optics boom I had the battery stolen from a GPS Receiver.?ÿ The setup was literally in middle of nowhere on a gravel in the Blue Mountains of Oregon.?ÿ The nearest ranch was miles away.?ÿ The rest of the kit was left in place.?ÿ Great thing was that they stole the battery 5 minutes AFTER I finished my last static session.
As the name implies, I carry a formidable weapon. I have never used it on anyone or threatened anyone with it. But that??s because it looks so freaking nasty I don??t have to. Whenever I have encountered someone that even looks suspicious on a job site they typically shy away from me when I throw that thing up on my shoulder and start walking towards them. If not, I cut off a few limbs and small samplings with a single wack as I get closer to them. That usually does it. But I don't work in the big cities. Different crowd.?ÿ
@dms330?ÿ
Thats the same policy I have. I??d be interested to know about a policy that covers theft on a piece of equipment left out in the open, unlocked, and unmanned. ?ÿ
@lunarfaze Make sure that you send the serial numbers to your dealer as well.?ÿ They will have the stolen equipment reported as such in Trimble's system.?ÿ Believe it or not, we have had people walk in trying to sell stolen equipment.?ÿ As soon as we checked the SN, we called the police and they were able to take the guys into custody.
