That sucks.

I'm back in Colorado working and was worried about my gear.

Coming from Las Cruces, we never left anything sitting alone. In fact while setting up a static control network, some meth head walked up to one our coworkers 2m GPS setup, while she was sitting in the truck 50 feet away, and picked it up and started walking. Coworker scream WTF ARE YOU DOING" and they set it down and kept walking.?ÿ

So my worry when the homeless guys would eye ball my Sx12 when I was a few hundred feet away made me uneasy to say the least. Boss said we have insurance so don't get into a physical altercation.?ÿ That was good to hear.

Hopefully you'll find it, might need to see if there's any locals that have an in around the area so you can 'buy' it back.

We had a gravity meter lifted in Mexicali years ago and found out who took it and gave them cash to get it back. Sometimes you get lucky.

Good luck.

O! it was just an R8. No big loss! (JUST KIDDING!!)

If you can use this opportunity to upgrade to the latest and greatest, maybe it could be a Blessing!

@nate-the-surveyor I believe an R8S is a 4-constellation setup being used as a base for an R12 or similar.

@jitterboogie?ÿ

About 12 years somebody stole the tripod out from under our base just outside Las Cruces. Left everything, battery, radio, GPS unit...except the tripod.?ÿ

It would seem that stealing expensive and registered equipment was a futile effort, and it still is in the USA where registrations are checked for activation.?ÿ A savvy thief who understands what they are stealing already has a black market contact that sells it overseas where they don't care about checking and have a work around for activation.

My COO recently came across a Leica TS-16 on EBay and bought it for $11k.?ÿ Before he would come out to activate it he tracked down the former owner to make sure it wasn't stolen.?ÿ It turns out that the owner was a local PD whoused it just a few times for accident reconstruction before the County took that over.?ÿ It was in pristine condition and he was amazed at the price we paid for it.

My point is, if anybody in the US tries to activate it, they will have to forfeit the instruments(s) to the Police for buying stolen equipment.?ÿ Be sure to notify your salesman and let them know it was stolen so that it puts a nationwide red flag if somebody tries to activate it.

In the fall of 2001 a Topcon AP-L1A was stolen from a job trailer in Wilkesboro, NC.?ÿ The next spring ir was found in the woods a half mile away with the case opened up.?ÿ A thief doesn't have a dime in it and is not in a position to negotiate a good price.?ÿ The only amount they need is enough for their next fix. Anyone willing to purchase a deal to good to pass up will throw it away instead of getting it repaired.?ÿ When you pay only 30 percent of the value you only need to get 30% of the use to break even.?ÿ

We filed a police report and it's insured.

Make sure the police have the serial numbers and a description of everything. It will automatically be sent to local pawn shops.?ÿ
