Here's a good one. I have a GPS base station set up on a hill here in Nome. Happens to be in the cemetery. Been leaving a tripod setup over the rebar for the last 3 years. Then, AkDOT started a new bridge over the Snake River last year, so their surveyor started using a point on the hill at the cemetery as well.

Jim, my crew chief, comes in last Thursday, "Hey, the tripod at the cemetery is gone" about then I get a call from DOT's surveyor..."Hey, did you pick up my tripod at the cemetery?"

Umm, No....
Filed the police report and all that jazz, not even thinking I would see my good Dutch Hill tripod again.

Posted it as missing on "Nome Announce" (sort of a local Craig's List)and got a response from the lady that looks after the cemetery. So sorry, I thought they were abandoned ... she gave them to another surveyor! Fortunately, he knows me and I got it back, DOT got theirs back also. Sigh!

How funny. All's well that ends well I guess.

Good thing the other surveyor was honest and gave them back. Not to point fingers, but, I think the other surveyor should have quizzed the lady as to exactly what she found and what status they were in when she found them to kind of figure out whether they were abandoned or not. She didn't know better, but the other surveyor has to know that someone wouldn't just abandon an expensive setup like that and that something was going on.

Dutch Hill makes a great tripod we are still using one that must be over 15 years old. Well worth the extra 100 dollars to upgrade to a Dutch Hill.
