  1. I have always been fascinated with the enchanting State of New Mexico.  And as a surveyor I would like to learn more about its history in respect to land surveying.  How much of it is based on Spanish and Mexican laws?  Are there any books or publications you would suggest?

One of the most interesting survey related issues for Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California is the international border.  I used to have a 4 volume set of books that chronicled the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo.  About 10 years ago, I sold the set to a good friend that was licensed in 2 of the 4 states.  There were numerous maps & field notes, along with all of the historic events and personnel associated with the treaty after the Mexican - American War.

From what I remember of the historic land descriptions I have read, most were based on the Spanish land grants.

I don't know much of the history, but when I was at NMSU in Las Cruces, I worked in Mesilla, where the Treaty was signed.  (if I recall that correctly)    Also, some of the survey students found the initial point just for fun.  We have some pics from that adventure.   #surveynerds
