It took time for tame crops to grow and that was only after landing in one spot long enough to achieve harvest from seeds brought from wherever the point of departure had been.?ÿ Ol' Bessie, the milk cow, would only produce if she had a calf encouraging her to do so.?ÿ That required having some other bovine with which to "do the nasty".?ÿ Most hardy breeds were more about meat than milk.?ÿ Nobody was dragging a "teat dragging" Holstein along for a couple thousand miles.?ÿ Sheep and goats are coyote food as they can't put up much of a fight compared to a 1000 lb. cow.
Knowing what naturally occurring plant life is safe to eat would have been critical.?ÿ Those juicy red berries can be deadly.?ÿ Fruit, of any kind, would have been a rare find in the nature of the Western US..

Of which month? Dates on food are quite conservative. You can usually tell when something goes bad, and a few days in a refrigerator is rarely a problem.
