I need to convert .mpeg video file to a .mp4 video file.
Can anyone recommend a good shareware program?

I'm not sure if it will do that particular combination (it's on my other computer), but a program called "Youtube Downloader" not only will capture YouTube, but will do a lot of file conversions.

works well for that, a free Firefox extension.
you can convert existing files on your computer from the tools pull down on Firefox.
I usually check CNET downloads for that kind of stuff.

How is that new rebel working out for you?
I am at an odd fork in the road for a new camera choice.
I have enjoyed the new rebel, but I am having some clarity issues with my older lenses and cannot use my 1.7 teleconverter in auto focus mode.
I still have not be successful at converting a video in mpeg format to a video in mp4 format.
