My son Peter (13) plays for a 14U baseball team. He's not a big kid, so as a pitcher he doesn't throw especially hard (around 60 mph), but he gets a lot of movement on the ball. The day before yesterday we were playing catch, and he threw a cut fastball that I just couldn't keep up with. I didn't even touch it with my glove, and it hit me on the inside of my right leg just above the knee. Here's a photo of the aftermath that I shot a few minutes ago:

A foot higher and I'd have been in real trouble...

My boy (9) and I went to a fun practice last night and I was warming his arm up. He through a couple of balls that warmed up my hand a bit. The sad part is that I could see the little smirk on his face. I know my bruises are on the way.

It won't be long before he'll be throwing hard enough to do some damage. When that time comes, and if he gets into pitching, my advice is not to catch him in a crouch unless you're wearing a cup and leg guards. It's pretty easy to avoid getting hit in the face or chest, but a ball in the dirt can take some unpredictable bounces toward the lower extremities. My injury was sustained standing up, but the ball was moving laterally faster than my aging reflexes could react.

I did -- I saw it all the way to my leg. Then I didn't see anything for awhile, because my eyes were squeezed shut as I hobbled around adjusting to the pain.

Now, if I could just make my glove move as fast as my eyes...

What really hurts your ego is when it's a 13 year-old daughter throwing the ball with the same results.
