I see your avatar as DDG43.
Where abouts was your port? Mayport, FL?
My brother was on DDG38 USS Luce out of there.
I've been on that boat many a time.
The "Sorry Sara" was parked/birthed next door a couple hundred
yards away at that time (mid 80s).

PS: Most probably don't know but DDG is a guided missile destroyer.
I sailed out of Norfolk, Eric. I was dropped from a helo flying off the Saratoga when I reported to the Dahlgren.
Small and fast, we ran lots of ASW and picket duty for the big guys. We were still a fair bit bigger than the real tin can sailors. Hat's off to the DD's.
For an OS (Radarman) it was busy duty tracking subs or running air defenze. We had a sophisticated computer system for it's time. The computer guys were gracious and we spent a lot of our off time on the forerunner of lan gaming, playing a type of space combat game among 10 or so tracking stations.

Fun stuff - probably not.
My Bro was a radar tech.
No call for that in the Persian Gulf.
He ended maning a forward-50-cal.
