I've spent the past hour trying to find the source of a noxious smell in my basement. I was sure that the cat had knocked over a can of spray paint. Turned out to be a Redi-Mark stake marker that I had left in a pair of work pants that I'd thrown into wash. Apparently the hot water released all of the solvent and a bit of the ink. My basement smells like a chemical factory and some of my pants look like dalmatians.:pinch:
BETTER THROW SOME RAGS IN THERE AND RUN IT FOR A FEW CYCLES....
I think the work pants soaked up the majority of what got out, but I'm still running a couple loads of old towels just in case.
Note that Chapstick can also ruin pants or shirts. Sad to say I found out the hard way.

If it were me, and I had ruined some pairs of pants I wanted to keep, I would get a can of Brakleen and spray the markered spots to take out the ink. The Trichlorothene, Trichlorothane, Trichloretheylene...whatever, is basically the same thing they're applying to your dry-cleaning anyway. I don't know what your house rules are but, I would run them through the wash one more time after the Brakleen was dried.
