The impression I get here is that you work for one of these companies that doesn't want to train their people.

Unfortunately I think that's the rule rather than the exception...

I'm reminded of the Richard Branson quote:

"Train people well enough so they can leave, treat them well enough so they don't want to."

The only thing worse than training employees and having them leave is not training them and having them stay.
