and try to take a more 'we're in this together' approach
That approach is probably the best way to work with folks.?ÿ But it only works if everyone has the same goal (at least to some extent).
So if you have a guy whose entire objective is collect the weekly paycheck.?ÿ The we're in it together wouldn't work as well as at least the guy whose in it for the paycheck, but also wants to do a good job to earn the pay.
If the person in your original post is a collect the paycheck type, then there will be very little that can be done to get a better attitude.?ÿ You might get a change for a short term with the various management methods suggested, but you won't lead as they are not on the same page with the organization's goals.?ÿ You'll only be able to manage them - which will take more of your time.
