Peter,

Maybe you will be able to see this thing getting towed in!

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20101109/ap_on_re_us/us_cruise_ship_fire

Just the sort of news I need as me and SWMBO are going on a cruise later this month! 😉

Have a great week!

The local paper says "The ship is located about 80 miles south of Ensenada in a place called Punta San Jacinto between Colonet Bays and San Quentin."
I expect this one will be repaired at sea or towed on up to LA. Perhaps it will be in port this evening to bus the passengers on up, but that would be an efficient offloading directly to the buses. No real impact except for the significant port fees.

We can easily handle several big boats at a time (containers and cruisers), but the drydock and repair facility is geared to the less than 200' size. many come here for refitting due to labor costs and materials that are unavailable in the US (spell that HAZMAT.

We do get several cruise ships a week, the Golden Princess and Paradise are both due in later today... it is a real nice boost to the local economy but not highly significant for a city of over half a million.

FYI:My home is about 9 miles (as the crow flies) from the harbor (45 minutes driving time) [ 31°43'N,116°39'W ] but many tour buses do get out to the general neighborhood on the way to some scenic "shopping opportunities"

Peter,

Thank you for the update. I found it interesting the US NAVY is sending an aircraft carrier. Heck I'd like to be on the disabled cruise liner just to see the carrier.

I'm jealous of where you live !!!;-)

Have a great week!

I wonder if this had anything to do with the cruse ship fire:

What goes up must come down.

Mystery "Missile"

Well, number one, does anyone else feel a little nervous that after more than 12 hours, the Defense Department STILL doesn't know what it was?

Or at least they're not saying.........

If it was one of our subs, ships or air stations accidentally firing off a missile, no one is saying.

If it turns out it IS one of our missiles, you've got to figure that's a loss of a few million dollars for the missile, plus the loss of some highly trained technicians (SOMEONE is gonna get busted big time.....), and at least one highly trained commander of one rank or another is going to walk the plank, or jump without a parachute.

Of course the worst case is that it's some would-be terrorist trying to duplicate Hamas' success with their rockets, or some similar situation.

Or maybe some surfers figuring a new way to scare off the sharks.........
