I must have gotten into something nasty. I am being attacked by advertisements. They just keep flashing up and I have to close them. I have Microsoft Security Essentials (which includes Windows defender) and I got a full version of "Malwarebytes" running all the time.

Can anyone advise me on how to get rid of this adware (?) attacking my computer. Is there a good software to kill this stuff?

Thanks in advance for anyone who might know.

I think that you have the right software to help you.
You need to run full scans of each.
I have noticed that this junk can float into the system through Chrome.
On a Chrome search, never click on their leading "ad" search results. IMO, I think that is a portal to problems.

Try setting up a bootable malware elimination tool on a different computer and booting your computer from the bootable cd or thumbdrive. In some scenarios, the malware can castrate the anti-malware software during the boot process, if you boot from the infected hard drive.

Thank you Robert, I have gone through full scans. I heard that sometimes these adware malicious viruses can actually recognize your malware defenders and disable them even if they look like they're working, so I uninstalled malwarebytes and reinstalled and did another scan. It still seems like the malicious ads keep popping up.

I have the onboard Microsoft Security Essentials.

Everything else is on a thumb drive:
Super AntiSpyware Portable
Malewarebytes
Detekt
HitmanPro
TweakNowPowerPack

A year or so back some bug was controlling and blocking the installed versions of antivirus from uploading updates.
Now they are on the thumbdrive and operated from there.

Some of that advertisement is almost undefeatable it seems. I can remember a discussion on this board about a firm in Cal. that advertised surveying services for mulch, tree and flowerbed planning. Well if you went to their site, their ads would follow you across the net in the form of banner ads. It works that way for some parts and equipment companies also.

If you just want to block the ads you can download Adblock Plus. You have to use it judiciously though, as websites you visit for free depend on ad revenue to keep running, and they're not always the obnoxious ones.

If you are interested in reading the depths of how it works, take your pick of articles in this queue Propublica-Dragnet. Pretty amazing what they can do.

If you want to see exactly who it is that is following you, Mozilla has Lightbeam for an interactive that allows you to pick and choose who you interact with.

It's free and it works. If you like it you can send them a small donation since they did the footwork for you.

I had a virus a few years ago that was written by the devil himself. I would have been seriously screwed without a
My backup program.
This hell spawn piece of code even recognized antivirus websites and redirected the browser. A real mess.
The answer to my antivirus prayers came from a website called bleepingcomputer.com
Bookmark this site now.
I used a combination of Rkill (It stops the malware from running) and combofix which gave that virus a proper rogering.
My Mom, who inexplicably allows the Grandkids to use her computer freely has had to use this combination several times.
Run a Google search on rkill and combofix and read up on it. It pretty quick and runs on it's own , but understand that there are risks to almost any deep diving anti malware tools.
Read all instructions and heed all cautions.
It worked brilliantly for my situation, your mileage may vary.
Don't forget to bookmark bleepingcomputer.com.
It will save you some day.

If you are running Chrome go to settings, then advanced settings and select "reset browser defaults" or something like that. Also while in settings make sure you review your default search and home pages. Some of the viruses will change these so that it points you the pop up ad hell. Pretty harmless trick as long as you don't click on the ads...

My son's computer was being plagued by ads that popped up and appeared over every tab. Clicking on any part of the ad (like the "x" to supposedly close the popup) opened another tab advertising something. I did the usual scans with Malwarebytes and a couple of others, but came up empty. Then I checked the extensions that he had loaded in Chrome and saw one with a name and icon that looked similar to Adblock Plus, but was something else. I removed that extension and the problem went away.

Same experience for me. The ads/bugs installed themselves as browsers extensions, so Malwarebytes had no affect on them.
