Noticed lighting up a sewer manhole with an LED bulb doesn't seem to have the focus or crispness of the incandescent bulbs.

There's light there but it seems to be just sort of a glow in contrast.?ÿ Anyone else see that ?

There's a number of different types of bulbs and flashlights available for sale, wondering what types of opinions there are on lighting

@gromaticus?ÿ?ÿ The sun's reflection off the shiny side of 25' fiberglass rod illuminated the sanitary (20'+ depth) better than

the LED flashlight.?ÿ Just seems the LEDs create more of a glow than a beam of light.?ÿ who knows.

@rj-schneider I find that looking into dark manholes and tanks from bright sunlight requires a rather powerful flashlight.

These exist, and are much brighter than older incandescents like Maglites or Surefires, and will fit in your pocket. They get pretty hot though if used continuously. They use lithium ion rechargeable batteries, so you will need a charger, or purchase a light with a built-in charger like the Sofirn Q8:

https://www.amazon.com/Rechargeable-Flashlight-XHP50-2-Function-pro-6500K/dp/B09STR56RR/ref=sr_1_3?crid=3OM0MV3EF3XQ2&keywords=sofirn&qid=1655025389&sprefix=sofirn%2Caps%2C75&sr=8-3

It can also recharge your cellphone!

You could also try a light that is more of a "thrower" with a narrow, more focused beam (think hand-held searchlight). This will concentrate the light in a small location. Personally, for shorter ranges like this, I prefer a floodier beam that illuminates everything at once.

I have also had some success (before I found the right flashlight) looking into test holes using a mirror to reflect the sun's light. Doesn't work on cloudy days though...

It took me an embarrassingly long time to get this.

"But Zebralights are manufactured, not brewed..." ??§?ÿ

I have a Cree Q5 LED light that goes everywhere with me. It's the brightest I've used (haven't compared many), has a focus adjustment from wide to spot, and uses one AA battery. There a lot of imitations using the same name, and I have one that is similar, but also has an annoying flasher mode.

Both so much better than the common AAA models.

@bill93 The annoying flasher mode actually has a practical surveying use:

When clearing a line through dense vegetation, set your light to strobe or flash and place it over the point to which you are clearing a line. The flash is visible through surprisingly dense vegetation.

Or you can use it for annoying flashers...
