I beleive the season opener is next Tuesday.
I caught several past shows of "After the Catch" this afternoon.
Major features of Capt. Phil. A total heart breaker.
I'm glad to see his boys are doing ok.

Deadliest Catch - and other "reality shows

Eric, Major Grain of Salt alert! ALL of these "reality" shows, especially the ones from Alaska, have a WHOLE bunch of BS in 'em! I can't speak for the shows from the lower 48, but most of what you see on tv are just that, BS. Weather gets really rough, Sig and boys are doing 12 oz curls at the bar in Duthc, as they should be, crab isn't woth dying for. I don't so much mind the BS of Deadliest, but boy they got some doozies out there! New one coming up titled "Mountain Man of Alaska" or some such sort of sheep dip. Supposedly follows Atz Kilcher and family (singer Jewel's dad). He was also my kids music teacher in elementary school (Now I feel old, they are all out of the house now!) Any hoots they are going to "chronicle his living off the land" with a garden and hunting. PFFFFT! His "homestead" is 20 minutes from downtown Homer, just a hop skip and a jump from Carrs/Safeway. Yeah, he grows his own veggies, but it's not a matter of survival, which is the premise of the show. There's a whole bunch of 2nd and 3rd "takes" so what you see on the TV is staged! Closest one is the Ak Troopers on NGEO, it has a better touch of realism.

When they busted the unibomber, the news agencies had a field day with "he lived in a one room cabin with one window!" We were sitting at the VFW in Anchor Point, "so what's wrong with that!?" Oh, well, the reality shows are entertainment, and just that. Unfortunately, they lead people to believe that it is all easy, like the young man that gave away all his possesions and hiked in country and starved to death in the bus. Anybody know how the bus got there? It was driven in off the flipping hiway! Just venting sorry. 🙂

COPS!!

Tell us how it is, JD!! You crack me up!! 😛 😀

I agree. It is NOT worth dying for!! At least Captain Sig has the brains to stay in when the weather is that bad. SO does Daryl Moistner! Daryl ran into Sig during one of those bad weather times. Lucky dog!!! :dog:

I like that AK Troopers one. My favorite reality show has always been COPS. COPS Official Website

Been watching that since it first aired 20 something years ago!! (March 11, 1989 to be exact.) 🙂

Yeah I know these are squat. A new one was filmed within walking distance from me a few months ago and aired last week.

I really wanted to move the AK back in the mid 80s but my wife wouldn't hear of it.
About 20 years later I'm with my 3rd wife up in the Appalachian mountains and roughing it there.

I wish the best for Jake Anderson, and Jake and Josh Harris.
Seeing them all talk about Capt. Phil really breaks my heart.
He was a great guy IMHO.

JD, I hear ya

what you said needed to be said.

Deadliest Catch was certainly good for a couple of years, but then the crews and captains began to be affected by the presence of the cameras, and things got a bit "hammy" and are getting worse. Not trying to take away from anyone's enjoyment of these TV productions, and I certainly do respect a guy like Phil Harris, he was one tough bastard with a great heart, and I wish nothing but the best for his boys. But the whole thing is getting pretty smarmy. Helluva lot better than "Whale Wars", holy sh1te have you ever watched that mess?

I spent several years working in Alaska back in my younger and better days (70's and '80's). Hydrographic work all along the Inside Passage, offshore seismic in the Bering, Chukchi and Beaufort seas, along with geodetic survey work onshore to support all that on those sea coasts. Have raised RayDist (yes I go back that far), Syledis and ARGO towers all along the many coasts of Alaska, and have also raised those 12-oz curls from Sitka to Kodiak, Nome to Kaktovik, including the Elbow Room and the UniSea Inn aka "Lunacy Inn" at Dutch Harbor. Have great memories of survey work for 2 summers in Cook Inlet and Katchemak Bay, some great times in Homer at the Salty Dawg, the Yah Sure Club and Land's End. All this was before the days of so-called Reality TV. The LockSpot Tavern and the Sloop Tavern in Ballard (Seattle) were also my haunts in those days, and those places are certainly tied to the Alaska experience for many seafarers. I certainly had some close brushes with reality in all of those places.

Watching these so-called reality shows about Alaska always makes me think: "Jeez, if you only knew what it used to be".

All that said, I do think that Ariel Tweto (on Flying Wild Alaska)is pretty awesome.

That takes me back, I remember my brother taking me to the LockSpot for breakfast when I was back in Seattle to return a leased car in 1988. It was mid December and there were cases of beer and cartons of smokes under the Christmas tree.

Deadliest Catch - and other "reality shows

It is a well known phenomenon that the presence of an observer changes the nature of the observed.

An observer or researcher's cognitive bias causes them to subconsciously influence the participants of an experiment.

It is a significant threat to objective analysis in serious scientific experimentation…..so one can only imagine how it skews a TV show.

I agree SC, I once had a boss that really made me nervous and I hated when he was in the room eyeballing me. He liked my work and I liked my position but his immediate presence had a negative affect on me. My thoughts were along the lines of "please get out of my office so I can get my work done". No matter how I tried to rationalize it, it was just bad chemistry, being alone was better then being with him.

On the other hand, some folks are the opposite, great chemistry and the sum is much greater than the parts.

I have noticed the same with my own employees too.

Interesting phenomenon you pointed out there, I believe it.

Thank GOD for DVR so I

don't have to watch that effing show anymore with my wife. Jesus I hate it.

You know, it's really funny. I have to watch effing Ghost Hunters, Ghost Adventures (these are crackheads on steroids), psychic kids, psychic pets (I'm not making that up), The Haunted, pick another effing ghost show, and Deadliest Catch, but she won't watch Good Eats, Sons of Guns (this is the second coolest show on) and Top Shot (first coolest show) at all. My daughter is almost as bad with Cake Boss and Say Yes to the Dress, but I still outrank her in the house.

I'm so happy I finally gave in on the DVR and I make her record all of here BS (I still end up watching some of it) and now I can record mine and watch it at my leisure.

At least she got the American Idol out of her system.

Tell us how you really feel Kris.

I can't believe she won't watch Good Eats with you. Does she not like Alton's scientific approach?

I do, she doesn't.

FWIW, I've tamed it down quite a bit for the eyes on this (and Wendell won't let me post those other words.) 🙂

The Tweto's are a good crowd. My wife used to dispatch for Hageland out of Saint Marys, until Jim's brother (who atually owned Hageland then) died. Yes, Ariel is a looker, little bit of a beotch, but then, she's a star now right? I flew a charter with Jim in his little 185, 4 hours up the Yukon to the Koyukuk to Hughes, awesome guy!

I watch Deadliest Catch because its pretty good entertainment.

I don't pay enough attention to know their names or such.

I an not a naive person, so I know there are plenty "made for tv moments", but none the less, it is still pretty cool, especially in HD.

I enjoy "Survivor Man", there are a couple of others like this one, but I do believe he is alone and films himself. He has given me a few tips along the way that make good sense.

The worst has to be those 2 idiots that travel around trying to buy other peoples junk.

"Pickers" or something like that. They bargain for things, buy it and then give a tally of what they think they can get for it. Pretty Stupid show and pretty stupid cast.

I saw where there is now a spin-off of "Pawn Stars", which i kinda like, and it is the guy that can turn a 70 year old coke machine into a new one or whatever. I think that is called "American restorer" or something, I will watch that because from what I have seen he is pretty dang good at what he does.

I like that one where those two guys become a part of a tribe. It's interesting to see how those tribes cohabitate with each other, and how they truly do live off of the land. Also makes me appreciate a warm shower!! 🙂

I REALLY like most of the home organizing shows & Hoarders. But I am weird!! I do NOT like things out of place or messy. Hence my nickname "The White Tornado". (Ask Wendell). 😛
