Agree with O'Roly. A mediator and apparently a pretty good one at that. Mend a fence, placate a neighbor and starve a lawyer.

I don't know all the specifics, but a "fence line viewer" is an ancient position typical of many New England states (and maybe others). They have specifically enumerated duties and at one time they were actually tasked with walking all the boundaries with neighbors on a periodic basis to make sure everyone know what was what. Actually not a bad idea.

Maybe Don Poole can jump in and enlighten us more.

Wasn't that referred to as the "Beating of the Bounds". I have heard this term in years past. You take each generation out and walk your lands showing them the limits of your farm.

I guess that is different than a fence line viewer. But both seem like good ideas. If you know what you own and where you own to then many of the silly and petty conflicts can be avoided in the first place.
