The telephone rang far too early the other morning but I answered it anyway.?ÿ It was a fellow who was a bit put out with me because he had called my office two weeks earlier and the woman promised I would call him back, probably that very day.?ÿ He gave me his name, which did not ring a bell when he started telling me how all he needed was for me to come out and find the corner markers I had set for him about 20 years ago.?ÿ When he told me the location I knew something was wrong because I have never done a job within five miles of where he was describing.?ÿ As he kept talking he said something about how I must have moved because he remembered that I was working out of (A Different City) at the time.?ÿ Now, I knew for certain he was calling the wrong surveyor and I knew who he wanted to be talking with.?ÿ I stopped him and revealed precisely who he needed to call and gave him that number.?ÿ He became very flustered but, fortunately, apologized and hung up.
The Register of Deeds Office in his county made up a little sheet with copies of two business cards on it several years ago..?ÿ They have a stack of those on the front counter that get passed out to anyone asking as to who usually do surveys there.?ÿ This fellow was reading the correct business name but calling my number by accident.
As I have reviewed surveys in several counties over the past 20 years I have received similar calls, which took more work to get the wrong number.?ÿ The signing surveyor's name and stamp are prominent and my little certification of having reviewed the plat is not prominent whatsoever.?ÿ Nevertheless, I have had people see my name, track down my phone number by some means and then call me asking questions about the survey.?ÿ On many occasions they will have a copy of it in their hand while calling me.?ÿ When I tell them I did not do such and such a survey project they protest and say, "Well, your name is on it because I'm looking at it right now."?ÿ This leads me to ask them if it is merely a signature or a signature, date and circular stamp all in one spot.?ÿ Of course the answer is "No, but I see something like that over here."?ÿ I ask for that name then point out where to look to see the telephone number that should be called.
I wonder if people get this pissed off and up in arms when their blood test results show bad values, their A1C is high, cholesterol off the charts, or tumor markers have changed for the worse, and call anyone listed in the medical records for some sort of power trip and control grab....
Why do people treat surveying with such disdain?
Ansewring your first question, yes a certain percentage of them do...
Any profession, trade or job that has any customer service component gets this kind of BS from some people
