I once worked at a company that would set a wooden staked with "Approximate Corner" written on it. Once I started there, I questioned the practice frequently by asking if they thought they would not be responsible if someone used that as the corner, if they were comfortable enough to put a stake and say it was approximate, how approximate was it and why not just go ahead and fix it to a position on the ground with a corner monument. Eventually, the practice was dropped to the wayside. I never liked it, but I've seen it a couple of other places as well.
