A post today about laser scanning got me thinking that it might be time for a dedicated laser scanning forum. I did a quick search and got 5 pages of results, so it seems like it could be beneficial. What say you?

I would view and contribute to a laser scanning forum.

Would like to know the reasons why someone voted no. Seems a bit strange.

In the general case I only think it is only needed to break up forums when there is too much traffic to keep up. When traffic is slow having a bunch of divisions just makes the whole affair look like an empty dresser with too many drawers.

@totalsurv

I'm your huckleberry.

Doesn't make sense (for me) because with the current traffic on the site I don't ever look at individual forums. At most two pages of "Recent Posts" gets me caught up since the last time I signed in.  Unless there is a specific use case where a separate forum would help drive search engine traffic to the site and be financially beneficial to Wendell, it just seems like superfluous balkanization (which would have been a great band name).  YMMV

@james-fleming Fair enough. It could perhaps send people in the scanning sector here though through Google searches.

At the end of the day, forums are basically categories. The vast majority of users do indeed start at the Recent Posts list. However, people do often find us via Google/Bing/whatever searches via the forums ("categories"). And, if someone has a specific question or type of thread they are looking for, they can start shopping in the appropriate forum.

That said, I do understand the concept of it not being totally necessary, since the Recent Posts list rules the day. I'm not too worried about the SEO though, so I'm open to either, hence the poll.
