Win10 connect to Ranger
Posted by lanceboyle93101 on January 23, 2019 at 6:49 pmNew workstation running Win10. Previous workstation running Win7 was nearly seamless; plug in usb and Explorer reads the drive on Ranger data collector. Copy/ paste files up and down. Now….
Win10 does not recognize the Ranger device. USB beeps, then nothing
Google search had workarounds that involved hacking the registry. WTF! Apparently, Active Sync and WMDC is incompatible w/ Win10 (googlers say. Haven’t tried that yet)
Search of RPLS gives nothing specific to this issue, which is odd. We all use data collectors and many use Win10.
How do you upload/download files from your DC to PC?

I know your frustration. So yes you can edit your registry, it will work to enable wmdc, but every windows update will revert your fix. Eventually windows will stop allowing it. We are at their mercy. So what I now do is just jump drive my job from DC to my PC, I’ve gotten used to it as my workflow. Not a big deal.

I don’t think that ‘every’ update will revert it to not working. I have not had to do the dance for months (since Feb 2018) on any of the machines around the office.
Consider using WiFi and FTP: https://blog.ashgps.com/2016/04/29/ftp-server-on-windows-mobile-devices/
I made a video: https://youtu.be/VHI4dwVbGbI , plus some notes: http://www.igage.com/v/bin/WMDC_Win10_CreatorsEdition_Fix_RevB.pdf on the fix method that I use.
I think this is the official T note: http://trl.trimble.com/docushare/dsweb/Get/Document-849325/Sprtnote_WMDC_WindowsConnectionIssues_0617.pdf

we’ve been using the memory stick method. Its clunky to copy/paste in Windows Mobil OS. Want to get away from that.
Nates workaround is what I’ve seen in searches but jeez, their must be a better way. Those super smart engineers at MS would not abandon functionality to mobile devices? Wrong.

We use TSC3s. I put each project in its own folder. Then Access organizes export files into their own folders. When doing Faststatic we download the receiver via Bluetooth to the TSC3 at the end of each session. Then it is simple to copy and paste the entire folder onto a USB flash drive.
I realize the first generation ranger doesn’t have a USB port if I recall correctly, only serial.
I personally own a Carlson Explorer (10+ years old). I haven’t turned it on in a few years. But it requires a cable download. I also own an old Windows XP laptop (which I haven’t turned on in a couple of years) which is good with the legacy equipment. We bought the laptop for daughter when she entered college in 2006. It couldn’t stand up to the college student abuse, I had it fixed under extended warranty and have been using it ever since. We got her a Macbook which just worked, that thing was tough. After a decade or so some of the plastic next to the keyboard was cracked, she took it to the Apple store and they fixed it, gratis.

Mark Silver is correct: “I don’t think that ‘every’ update will revert it to not working. I have not had to do the dance for months (since Feb 2018) on any of the machines around the office. “
I work for the Feds (or did) and our work PC’s are now on latest Windows 10 build 18 and the support note from Trimble remains valid. https://community.trimble.com/docs/DOC-13304-windows-mobile-device-center-wont-run-on-latest-windows-10-os
I have run every Trimble in our stockpile through multiple machines and here are the tips. Mark’s video is excellent, but my method does not require any registry hacks – Mark’s method saves a reboot.
1) Run the EXE at the link above
2) Reboot computer, keeping the windows mobile device connected via USB
3) Run a search WINDOWS KEY / “S”. on Windows Mobile Device Center and place the program in your taskbar (right click).
4) Tap on the WMDC icon and wait. This wait period is what is needed by WMDC to come “out of hibernation”.
5) After a few minutes, Unplug device from USB. Plug back in. Observe device if the Active Sync window pops up (15 seconds).
6) If not connected, alter the Advanced Network Functionality tool under Settings, Connections, USB to PC. Flip the switch and WAIT.
95% of the time, she connects. If not, another restart, keeping device connection will work.
Again, this is 100% effective and will “stick” through updates between Windows 10 builds to the current build.

I have had it work with our Rangers running windows 10. It does hang up some times and I will have to unplug it and plug it back in some times but so far it has always worked.
