The Elevator Shaft
Yesterday we were traversing at the bottom of a steep hill. We climbed out at lunch time to have lunch at the truck (not very far, just steep).
Two Engine Crews hiked by while we were down there doing P.T. in full yellow nomex, tools, packs and hard hats. They have to be able to outrun a fire if necessary so they need to be in top condition. They asked my front tripodman (new name for my licensed surveyor employee/partner) if he wanted them to get out the chainsaws. He kind of disappointed them when he said it wasn’t necessary we are just doing light brushing (the line is already pretty well cleared out). I think they wanted to play with their chain saws 🙂
So on my way back to the truck I come to where the two Fire Engines are parked. There’s a fire fighter there in t-shirt and work out shorts. He starts asking me about what we’re doing etc. And we’re talking about this little gem of a forest that is what I would call a best kept secret.
Kind of jokingly I said I couldn’t find the tramway then I said I wanted to know where the elevator is located.
Perfectly seriously he says, “Oh you mean the elevator shaft…” Then he starts giving me elaborate instructions on how to get to the elevator shaft. I think wow he’s really going along with the joke. But I finally figure out he’s talking about a trail 33% hill 300′ high at the south end of the parcel. We hiked that at least 3 times. He says he avoids that one. When we were traversing down a 4-person engine crew was hiking up. The Captain stopped and talked to front tripodman (the crew went by meanwhile) then he passed up the crew (they weren’t going slow) and talked to me then he passed them up again. And this is with full gear, not lightly dressed like us (although we have to carry our equipment up and down).
