Pre processing RINEX files for AUSPOS – Online GPS Processing Service
AUSPOS can process many days of GPS observations, for accurate coordinates to high levels of confidence. Although I’ve found that two days are usually good enough, you can make longer observations for increased levels of confidence. After 7 days of observations, there’s a 95% confidence that Eastings and Northings are within 3 to 4mm and elevation is within 8mm.
I don’t want to leave the latest expensive GNSS equipment unattended, where it could potentially be stolen, even if insured, I’d rather avoid insurance claims, to avoid being stung by increased premiums. So I have some old Leica GPS 300 kits from the 90’s, I still try to locate them where they’re less likely to be stolen, however if it does happen, it won’t break the bank. There are also plenty of Leica GPS 500’s around as well that would be suitable. From the data I’ve submitted, AUSPOS informed me, that these old Leica units record very clean data (Made in USA).
Before submitting your RINEX data to AUSPOS, it needs cleaning up. The Epoch date has rolled over for most old equipment, so the first task is to update the date, then if records exceed one day of recording, full days are required, so any partial days need to be removed (unless < 1 day recorded), also all satellites must have measurements, satellites without measurements must be removed.
So I wrote a little program in Java to clean up the RINEX for submission to AUSPOS, to save myself a little time.
If anyone else might like to use this tool, get in touch, happy to share.
