Pond Topo
I’ve got several detention ponds to topo for silt buildup-all under 20 feet deep. In the past I’ve used my kayak with several different configurations. Depending on the depth, GPS, robotics or handheld sonar. I’m wondering what others use and is there any inexpensive bathymetry gear I should consider? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated-thanks!

We have done the same quite efficiently. I think it all depends on the size of the pond but you can get simple bathymetry setups relatively cheaply these days.

I use a RC boat that is hooked up to a single beam sonar and GPS. I can manually guide the boat or put it on auto pilot and it will run a pre-determined course. I usually put a FC-5000 inside and then remote desktop in with a laptop and can take single shots at specific locations.

I went through Seafloor in California and am using a Sonarmite. It bluetooths to your my Trimble and is easy to use. Cost about 6k, can mount to most boats. We also have a Hydrone we use which allows us to survey very shallow water when needed.

If you can line up a bunch of work to do all in a row, they do rent those units, shipped door to door.
