Oregon PLSO Beerlegger?
Posted by mike-berry on January 16, 2016 at 5:32 pmI was curious if any of the Beer Leg gang planning to attend the conference in Eugene next week were interested in occupying one of the nearby pubs after classes on Wednesday? I‰Ûªm not all that familiar with Eugene, but google maps shows a couple nearby saloons. If I recall, there‰Ûªs a lounge in the top floor of the hotel too.
I corresponded with Wendell and it appears he will only be at the convention on Friday, so if a Wednesday shindig happens maybe he and Angel could skype in. A cyber beerlegger with the Commanders in Chief.

I’ll be there. Wed night is best. We should be sure to find a place within walking distance for obvious reasons. 🙂

There are 2 options about 1 block northeast from the Hilton: Steelhead Brewing and Tap & Growler. They are across the street from one another in case one looks better than the other. A couple other spots are within a few hundred feet if a back up plan is needed. Steelhead makes their own beer, and is a typical sit down restaurant and bar. http://steelheadbrewery.com/eugene/ Tap & Growler has 50+ taps of beer, wine, and cider, plus a decent size food menu. http://tapandgrowler.com I prefer Tap & Growler. Bigger tables, more beer options, casual atmosphere.
Across the street, south of the Hilton is Doc’s Pad. A typical sports bar. Nothing fancy, but close.
I would avoid 6th Street Bar and Grill, even though it’s close.

Sounds good. Tap and Growler at 207 E 5th Ave, Eugene, OR 97401, across the street from Steelhead. Half hour/45 minutes after the last sessions end on Wednesday?

I have in-laws in Pleasant Hill and for about 20 years whenever we’d go visit the brother-in-law would insist we go out to eat at 6th Street. He loves the place. It wasn’t bad, but what with all the other dinning possibilities in Eugene it was sort of a Ground Hog Day nightmare to see him unhinge his jaw and devour the suf ‘n turf year after year after year

Great! I’ll be there too.

I should clarify before I bad mouth 6th Street too much. The restaurant is good. Good food, especially the burgers! But the bar side has gone down hill over the last few years. If you’re looking for food after the conference any other night, the restaurant is not a bad choice. But as Mike said, there are definitely a lot of other great options in town.

For those of you who have not had the pleasure of attending one of JB’s seminars; you are in for a treat! 😀
I hope everyone has a great day; I know I will! -

Do you mean JB’s seminar at the convention or in the bar??? 🙂 I’ve attended both and highly recommend them! -

D- Good to know, but after 20 years X 3 to 4 visits per year to Pleasant Hill and ostensibly the 6th Street Bar and Grill to watch the log truck driver across the table scarf down a steak and prawns washed down with a quarter dozen McNaughtons and Cokes, I’m good. However, where would you recommend for good Mexican or Asian food within walking distance of the Hilton? I’ve been relying on the in-laws to make this choice all these years, but with your help I can go rogue beyond the confines of 6th street, that turtle place and Mazzis.

Classes end at 1630 on Wednesday, BUT the Exhibitor Reception Social runs until 1830. Is the plan to skip the “free” drinks at the social and head to the BeerLegger at the Tap and Growler right after classes or later after the social ends?
I will be at the conference all three days, actually going over on Tuesday and will be there as both an exhibitor and attending classes. As an exhibitor I suspect I will be at the social until it shuts down at 1830 on Wednesday.
Hope to see many old and new friends this week in Eugene, looking forward to a great conference!

Sweet Basil is pretty good Thai food, 3 blocks southeast of the Hilton. It’s good, but not the best in town (that would be Sabai at Oakway Center). Ta Ra Rin is another Thai place 5 blocks south.
Pure Sushi & Saki bar is 1 block from Tap & Growler. I’ve heard good things, but my wife doesn’t eat fish, so I don’t get to go.
Belly Taqueria is 2 blocks north. Great food, not necessarily authentic though. Definitely made in America, but close to the border. Belly has another restaurant off Broadway which is good, but not Mexican food.
You have lots of options if you head toward the intersections of Willamette & Broadway (2 blocks south), or 5th & Pearl (2 blocks northeast).
I’m happy to give more opinions over beer on Wednesday.

There’s a plan now that you’re on board Shelby. Since there are free drinks I don’t think any surveyor would want to skip that. Perhaps folks will start trailing over to Tap and Growler more towards 6:30 after the exhibitor social.

By free drinks, I meant the tickets that normally come with a full registration.

I agree with meeting after the social.

Here is a photo of the Beer Legger at the PLSO convention. Several posters came and went during the night.

The guy with the plaid shirt is Scott Freshwaters; the guy with the beard, in the foreground is Mike Berry, I think. Hard to tell that close…
I hope everyone has a great day; I know I will!
