Older Total Station with Newer Data Collector
Hello all,
I am just getting started and have purchased an older total station (specifically a Sokkia SET 5..). Can I run a newer data collector with this or do I need to get something a little older? I have been looking at some used TSC2 rangers on EBAY with Survey Pro that are going for 500$. Any advice or experiences you have had would be greatly appreciated. Please keep in mind that I am just getting started and cannot go out and get any top of the line equipment right now. Thanks!

Survey Pro has drivers that will work with a SET 5. If I am not mistaken, you should use the SET 2-WAY driver.

Congrats. As a new surveyor, I cannot help but say “get reflectorless”. I like the narrow beam ones. That’s gonna be Leica. I don’t know if anybody else made a good narrow beam one.
The things you can do w/ reflectorless, well, it’s well worth it.

Thanks for the feedback. I may just purchase one and see how it works. Worst case I can just sell it if they cant communicate. The gun came with a HP48 but I do not have the download software and haven’t used a 48 in about 15 years.

Have available some transfer programs for the HP48 – SMI Tfr 98 (up to v6) and SMI Tfr v7 (all versions) and TDS and onboard software for Sokkia Set ?30R Series and Manuals in pdf. Still looking for my version of KERMIT.
Can also transfer with most versions of Carlson Cadd programs.
Will definately work on a computer with a serial port (winxp pro 32 $75 & up) and null modem cable ($5 & up) from EBay or.
Would not install on my Win 7 Pro 64, must be a 32 system.

When I was just starting out i got decent new equipment from Hayes on a “worry free lease”.
In my opinion it’s just not worth it to be behind the curve with equipment.

New data collector and old instrument should work. I have a spectra precision nomad that I purchased new in 2013. I have used it with various older guns. I think I even used a Set 5 or Set 6 with it.
Nate’s right about reflectorless. I got spoiled to a Trimble S6 robot when I worked for someone else. A good reflectorless can be ALMOST as productive. Topcon uses a narrow beam as well. I can shoot through a hole in the brush to get that one building corner that would otherwise require an extra setup.
