Old Farts that want an adventure!!
NY state Land Surveying sort of croaked in 2009, but some of us older folk who were right on the edge of technology are still around…I broke out an old transit the other day to do a little topo for my brother and I dare say most folks would ask where you turned it on. There is no surveying work around here…I saw a fellow that needed help, but right off the bat you had to go to Indeed to apply!!
What if we had a system where surveyors that lost out because of politics had a place to go and help fellow surveyors. I would love to survey in many of the areas shown on this forum…just to visit there!!! Park the camper somewhere and help with a project, just for fun!! Hell a venison steak and some beer is worth more than a w-2 form!! Gas money to the next job would be great…most of us are on social security and can only earn a certain amount per year anyway.
There has to be so much talent out there going to waste, no mentoring, lonely old solo guys trying to go it alone…on and on!!
Does anyone else feel the way I do??

I feel ya, dawg! You think NY is dead? Ha! Mohave Valley, Arizona is smack in the middle of Dead Central. Even MacDonald’s here isn’t hiring!
There’s work out there, but you’re gonna have to travel. Texas (low wages), North Dakota (too damn cold!), Alaska (even colder!). I’m thinking Alaska next spring.

Well David, Kingman isn’t exactly setting the world on fire either. But do have a few things still cooking, mostly because the other solo guy won’t do topos or construction staking and the bigger firm keeps “losing clients” due to their own procedures.
A couple years ago I thought about going to the oil fields in ND or even Northern Alberta. No thanks – don’t like living in camps when it’s below zero. I did briefly look into Texas too.
In terms of old retired surveyors filling a void by helping out – I say “pffftt too that – stay retired. Refer that work to an associate”. All it does is drive prices down and take work from us guys who are struggling to stay afloat in this krappy economy. (sorry)

Yes. If only the state societies would get their duckies in a row and buy up all the good hunting and fishing parcels at the tax auction … stop having conventions at a hotel or casino and have them somewhere you own. Every surveyor has a tent or RV anyhow.
