NGS State Plane Coordinate System 2022 update webinar tomorrow
This was rescheduled from February because of the shutdown. It’s not too late to register for what is sure to be an informative update from Dr. Michael Dennis.

I’d like to, but there’s no rain in tomorrow’s forecast, so I have to chip away at some backed-up field work.

One item that caught my eye is that they are thinking about using 0 to +360 longitude values, including as the defining parameters of the state plane zones. I sent in a question–why not use -360 to zero so that less areas are affected–but that wasn’t one of the questions they chose to answer. Michael did say he’ll compile the questions into document for later release.
I found responses to 2 poll questions interesting. One was whether people had viewed the two SPCS webinars from last year. Over half the respondents said no. At the end they had a poll about future topics. You could choose multiple options, one of which was to have a webinar on fundamental map projection concepts. That got picked by 70% of the respondents (> 900 people were online).
A few states have already suggested proposals like Iowa wants their 14 zone system to be officially SPCS2022 and Florida is discussing using Lambert conic for the panhandle, and 2 oblique Mercator zones for the East and West zones.

They also mention, ironically the forms from NGS to suggest zones are due at the end of the month, yet the forms are not available from NGS.

I suppose the only changes will be the new datum, negative longitude, and the false easting/northing?

Yes, I watched the webinar, and was happy to see Iowa featured. I was just speculating on how similar they would make it to the present system. That list of changes would probably be the minimum.

I thought it was informative. I like how they are attempting to minimize the distortion at the topographical surface, rather than at the grid. Wishing & hoping that in the new system grid to ground will no longer be relevant in my area.

There was a note that the new definitions had to have coordinate values that were at least…10k?…from any existing definitions or other zones within that state’s 2022 definitions.
