Just an observation…
Posted by Wendell on August 6, 2010 at 4:19 amIf la#@&yers can be associated with such things as sharks and polecats while still maintaining a “professional” appeal, why is it considered a negative thing for surveyors to be associated with beer? That seems tame in comparison, yet we do not get the credit we deserve as licensed professionals.

I think that (a) there are a lot of insecure surveyors and (b) “Beer Leg” has a bit more character than anything else I’ve heard so far. There will always be those who think that surveyors ought to be either Geospecial Professionals or ministers of the gospel, the latter not realizing that no surveyor was ever a saint.

A couple of variations to consider would be
Professional Beer Legomatics
and
Geospecial Beer Legistics

Kent I would have thought you would have preferred redleg, others bourbonleg, scotchleg waterleg….
RADU…

not to mention Jakeleg. has a history back to prohibition days.

In a profession where field work, cutting line, digging for evidence and lugging equipment around in all kinds of weather and all kinds of terrain is a major part of the deal, the “look” of a land surveyor does not fit what most Americans have been taught a “professional” looks like.
And as much as I may like to have a beer with dinner, I don’t want the lasting impression to be a guy lugging around a couple of six-packs.
Think of it this way:
What did you see the last time you observed several lawyers practicing their profession?
What did you see the last time you saw a group of surveyors practicing THEIR profession?Last time you went to a planning board meeting, were you able to tell the surveyors from the lawyers the moment you walked into the room?

At last years Math*Counts they introduced us as Engineers and 1 Surveyor.
At lunch one table said “Your the surveyor right?”
I looked down and I had a nice shirt, tie, slacks, dress shoes so I asked “What gave me away?”
They laughed and said “Your tan and not all pasty like the others”..
Hard to hide that even in dress clothes.
