Today we call that “dress for success”.
Even 200 years ago all the surveyors looked grumpy.
On a Western I watched a couple of days ago, one of the main actors was having a conversation with a fellow who had spent much time in the wilds of the West in those early days. He commented that someone with that much information of the area must either have been a soldier or a surveyor as there were very few settlers. He added, “You don’t strike me as being a surveyor.”
I’m ready for my close up, Mr. Demille

I hope everyone has a great day; I know I will!Recently watched one of the movies made to project Bonanza into the future a few decades with grandchildren coming to the ranch that was being maintained for them by Ben Johnson. Some money-hungry crook was out to use his political pull to take control of the Ponderosa. In one scene, Ben Johnson and some of the grandchildren came up on a survey crew in the middle of the Ponderosa. If you have ever wanted to witness what handgun bullets can do to instruments and their wooden cases, etc., this is the scene you are looking for.
