Ancient Instrument
A friend of mine picked up what appears to have been survey instrument set at a second-hand store around here. She says it had a wood box, “a neat brass thing” (theodolite I assume), “a weight” (plumb bob?), and this tripod.
Someone paid her $300 for everything but the tripod.
I was curious if anyone happened to recognize the tripod and/or knows what set of equipment it might have come from?

I don’t know, but will guess that it’s a 3 1/2″ tripod head with the remains of a target holder screwed on it.

From the paint it looks to have been military, maybe?

OD Green it was for military use. I have a couple in the shed. Now some of the old military gear was dispersed over the years and civilian contractors and civilian government employees that supported military often kept or purchased that for jobs around bases. USACE also had some of those. I am planning to make a neat lamp one day with one of mine. Just have not found a broken transit that i can retrofit yet. As I will not destroy a decent one. An old k&e and use the scope for a direct light. Maybe when I retire I will get around to it.
